Wolfpack Multisport is proud to call Rochester, NY (and Perry, NY as its fun-time home). Rochester, NY is a rare city in that it has three waterfalls in the river that runs through it, the mighty Genesee. This week we are going to a much more famous set of waterfalls, Niagara Falls.
Niagara Falls has attracted many animals, objects, and daredevils to go over the falls or from platforms into the falls. One famous daredevil, Sam Patch, jumped from a platform 80 feet above the bottom of the falls, and a second time from 120 feet in October of 1829. This was all of course a warm-up for his big show in Rochester (it wasn’t bigger, the crowd was smaller). On Friday, November 6, 1829, in front of an estimated seven to eight thousand people, Sam Patch let his very talented pet bear demonstrate how to properly jump down the 96-foot tall falls from the rock ledge in the middle, and Sam Patch jumped in after. For comparison, Niagara Falls is 167 feet high.
Niagara Falls is a group of three waterfalls: Horseshoe Falls (aka Canadian Falls), American Falls, and Bridal Veil Falls. The latter two lie within the United States, and are separated by Luna Island. Goat Island separates the Canadian Falls from the Bridal Veil Falls. Goat Island is in the United States.
Industrialization threatened the existence of Goat Island. In 1868, William Dorsheimer, brought Frederick Law Olmsted to Buffalo. Dorsheimer was so moved by the scene from the island, that he sought to have it preserved. On April 30, 1885, Governor David B. Hill signed legislation creating the Niagara Reservation, New York’s first state park. Goat Island has been under threat of erosion, so erosion control efforts have always been of extreme importance. Underwater weirs redirect the most damaging currents. In 1969, the Niagara River was completely diverted from the American Falls for several months through construction of a temporary rock and earth dam. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers used this opportunity to study the riverbed and take action to stabilize the future of Goat Island and the American Falls.
During this week’s run, you will explore every nook and cranny of Goat Island. You will see Three SIsters Islands, the Power Portal where a statue of Nikola Tesla can be seen, and run between the edge of the Canadian and Bridal Veil Falls and then across Luna Island to the edge of the American falls. Make sure your family has purchased tickets on the Maid of the Mist for your recovery after the finish line.
